With version 2.2, WebWall isn’t changing its look, but it is becoming more practical. The new release doesn’t aim to dazzle with flashy features; instead, it focuses on making the daily work of protecting a website or web application clearer, faster, and easier to control. In the realm of security, that is often the difference that truly matters.

The most interesting feature is the enchanced Sensitive Path Shield. Essentially, it allows administrators to create .htaccess rules for a site’s most sensitive paths while adding tracking capabilities. In other words: it’s not just about closing a door, but about getting a better view of who passes by and what they are trying to do.
Another key addition is the Hive Network, which connects multiple WebWall nodes to share threat information in real time. This is a valuable feature because it shifts the system from a purely local logic to a distributed one: if one node detects suspicious behavior, that information can be shared across the others. In an environment rife with automated attacks, this is a highly sensible feature to have.
Greater Data Control
Version 2.2 also introduces a new Logs Audit page, offering the ability to download the list of IPs and actions recorded in the local database as a CSV file. It may not be a headline-grabbing feature, but it proves invaluable when you need to truly understand what happened, reconstruct an event, or review administrative activity. This aligns well with the direction WebWall has taken in previous versions: a greater focus on traceability, data management, and administrative oversight. The platform continues to champion an approach where protection is inseparable from the ability to read, export, and verify what is actually happening.
Refinements that matter
Alongside the most visible new features, there are less flashy yet significant updates: a revised admin configuration, updated translations, an upgraded MySQL database, a revised default GDPR policy, an improved installer, and various interface bug fixes. These changes may not alter the product’s specifications on paper, but they make it more robust in real-world use.
There is also an improvement to CPU health monitoring in the automatic “Under Attack” mode, featuring an optimized “Hash Chain” parameter. It is the classic type of tweak that goes unnoticed when everything is running smoothly but proves invaluable when traffic spikes and the system needs to respond effectively without faltering.
A mature release
Looking at WebWall’s evolution as a whole, version 2.2 feels like a release focused on maturity rather than expansion. Previous versions had already established the modular architecture, behavioral logic, SQLite database separation, and Cloudflare integration. With the “Spengler Edition“, the system adds practical tools for managing sensitive paths, facilitating node cooperation, and auditing activities. In short: this isn’t a release that changes everything, but one that makes the product more transparent, easier to manage, and more useful to those who actually use it. And for a security system, that is exactly the kind of evolution that makes sense.
PS: We chose the name “Spengler” (Egon) for this release because, just like the movie character, it’s all about substance and no-nonsense.
